How to Get Set Up on Bing (and Why You Shouldn’t Ignore It Anymore)

A practical guide to staying visible in an AI-driven search landscape

There’s a shift happening in how people find small businesses online - and if you rely on your website to bring in work, it’s worth paying attention to.

People aren’t just Googling things anymore. They’re turning to tools like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity - asking full, human questions like:

“Who’s a good wellness coach for women in perimenopause?”

“Find me a brand strategist for female-led businesses.”

These tools are responding with real suggestions, often pulling from websites that are well-written, well-structured - and indexed on Bing.

If that last part caught you off guard, you’re not alone.

This post is for small business owners who’ve been focused on Google (understandably!) and are now hearing whispers about Bing and AI search and wondering what they actually need to do.

Let’s walk through it together - strategically, and without the overwhelm.

1. The confusion is real

You’ve probably heard people talking about AI, ChatGPT, Bing, Copilot, and maybe even Perplexity.

But how does that connect to your website?

And why are people suddenly saying Bing matters?

Here’s what I want you to know: Search is changing, but your website isn’t irrelevant. It’s more important than ever.

If you've never set up your website on Bing, this is the perfect time to do it - and it's easier than you might think.

You don’t need to overhaul your entire strategy - you just need to understand the shift.

2. What is AI search - and how is it different from Google?

Unlike traditional search engines where people type in short phrases, AI tools are designed for conversational discovery.

Instead of:

"branding coach UK"

People now ask:

"Who’s a branding coach that works with women entrepreneurs and offers website support?"

AI tools scan the web, summarise helpful content, and recommend providers. And they need well-structured, clear websites to do that.

3. So... why Bing?

Here’s the bit most people don’t know:

  • ChatGPT’s web browsing tool uses Bing to gather real-time information

  • Bing also powers Microsoft Copilot and DuckDuckGo’s AI answers

So while Google is still the biggest name in search, Bing is becoming a crucial player in how AI tools find and recommend businesses online.

And because Bing is less saturated than Google, small businesses often have a better chance of being seen.

4. What this means for your website

You don’t need to become an SEO wizard or tech expert. But to stay visible, your site needs to:

  • Be crawlable and indexable (via Bing Webmaster Tools)

  • Clearly state what you do, who you help, and where you’re based

  • Use real, human language

  • Be structured with clear headings and simple navigation

Think of it like this:

The easier your site is to understand, the easier it is to recommend - by both people and AI.

5. How to Set Your Site Up on Bing in 10 Minutes (Without the Overwhelm)

Here’s exactly how to do it:

  1. Go to Bing Webmaster Tools

  2. Sign in with a Microsoft, Google, or Facebook account

  3. Click 'Add Site' and choose Import from Google Search Console (if you’ve already connected your site there)

  4. If not, choose 'Add your site manually' and enter your homepage URL

  5. You’ll be asked to verify ownership - you can do this by adding a meta tag to your site or uploading a file (Wix makes this easy in SEO settings)

  6. Submit your sitemap (usually at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml)

  7. You’re done! Your site is now visible to Bing - and to a growing number of AI tools that rely on it

💡 Worth knowing: Platforms like Wix, WordPress, and Squarespace don’t automatically connect your site to Bing. To make sure your site is fully visible in Bing - and in AI tools like ChatGPT and Copilot - you’ll need to submit it manually through Bing Webmaster Tools.

6. The takeaway: Show up with clarity - for AI and your audience

You don’t need to become an AI expert. You just need a website that communicates clearly - so people (and tools) can understand what you do, who you help, and why it matters.

The good news? You don’t have to start from scratch. A few small, strategic updates can make a big difference.

And when you're ready to take the next step, I'm here to help you figure out what your site really needs - and what it doesn’t.
